The Appalachian Laboratory Environmental Science Education (ALESE) program promotes environmental science literacy and understanding of ecology and environmental issues of the Appalachian region and the Chesapeake Bay watershed. ALESE provides:
  • Teacher professional development
  • Education and outreach products
  • Environmental science outreach to schools and other groups

Our program builds directly on science research activities at the Appalachian Laboratory, part of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES). ALESE participants learn science by experiencing research. They examine current environmental issues, explore real scientific datasets and research tools, and work side-by-side with laboratory researchers. Participants emerge with a heightened awareness that science is a dynamic exploration through which our understanding of the world continuously advances.

ALESE is a member of the Environmental Science Education Partnership (ESEP), a collaboration of science education specialists at UMCES Appalachian Laboratory, UMCES Horn Point Laboratory, UMCES Chespeake Biological Laboratory, Maryland Sea Grant and the Center of Marine Biotechnology.
